Human VO Badge v2_edited.png

You may have noticed this little gold badge appearing on my website, emails
and other communications. It's there for a reason.

Voiceover is ultimately about communication. Whether we're selling something, telling a story, explaining a process, teaching someone how to do something safely or simply trying to get an idea across, we're asking another human being to listen to us and, importantly, to trust what we're saying. I believe authenticity and human understanding are the soil in which that trust grows.

What does 100% Human Voiceover mean?

Quite simply, if you engage me to provide a voiceover, the voice you receive is me.

It's not an AI-generated version of me. It's not cloned, synthesised or artificially recreated. I haven't licensed a digital version of myself to perform the script while I go off and have a cup of coffee.

I read it. I think about it. I perform it.

And I bring more than a voice to that process. I bring many years of experience in television, radio, audio and production, but I also bring something that's much harder to put on a specification sheet: human intuition. When you give me a script, I'm thinking about who we're talking to, what we're trying to tell them, why they should care and how the words need to feel. Sometimes all of that is obvious from the page. Sometimes it isn't. That's part
of the job.

So, am I anti-AI?

Not at all.

I use AI myself. In fact, I used AI to help create the gold badge that probably brought you to this page. To me, that's a perfect example of what AI can be: a tool. It can help us research, explore ideas, create things, solve problems and work more efficiently. Its potential applications in areas such as science and medicine are extraordinary, and I suspect we've barely scratched the surface of what it will eventually help us do. But I make a distinction between using artificial intelligence as a tool and using it to replace the human contribution that somebody has engaged me to provide.

If you're hiring me for my voice, you're also hiring my judgement, interpretation, experience and intuition. I don't want to outsource those things to a machine.

My promise to you

When you see the 100% Human Voiceover | Nothing Artificial Added badge on my work, it means:

  • The voice performance is genuinely mine.

  • Your script has been read, interpreted and performed by me.

  • I will not substitute an AI-generated or cloned version of my voice for a human performance.

  • The decisions I make about pace, emphasis, tone, emotion and storytelling come from me.

  • If you give me direction, you're directing a human being who can listen, understand, question, adapt & respond.

  • I won't allow my voice to be cloned or used for AI training as part of your project unless we've specifically discussed and agreed to it.

I may still use technology, including AI-assisted tools, where they make sense around the edges of my work. I'm not trying to pretend it's 1995. What the badge guarantees is that the performance itself is human.

That's my line in the sand.

No cloned voice. No synthetic David. Just me, a microphone and, hopefully, a pretty good understanding of what you're trying to say.

Authenticity is what the audience hears. Intuition is what gets you there.

100% Human Voiceover. Nothing Artificial Added.
